A political adviser to Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki on Wednesday asked the Australian government to clarify its position toward a recent meeting between Australian ambassador to Israel Dave Sharma and Israeli Housing Minister Uri Ariel in Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem).

"We condemn the conduct of the Australian Ambassador," Ahmed al-Deek told Anadolu Agency.

"The meeting violates a general European consensus consistent with international laws considering East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state," he added.

Al-Deek said the Palestinian Foreign Ministry will follow up the issue with the Australian government, given the fact that the meeting wa a "blatant violation of international law and a direct support for the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories".

In an unprecedented move, the Australian envoy met with the Israeli Housing Minister in his office in East Jerusalem on Tuesday.

The Israeli minister asked the Australian ambassador to thank Australia's prime minister for his support for Israel, Israeli daily Maariv quoted sources close to Ariel as saying.
