Egyptian naval forces detained three Palestinian fishermen in Palestinian territorial waters off the Gaza Strip, a spokesman for Palestinian fishermen said Tuesday.
"Egyptian gunboats besieged a Palestinian fishing boat off the coast of Rafah on Monday night and took it into Egyptian territorial waters," Nezar Ayash, a spokesman for Gazan fishermen, told Anadolu Agency.
Egyptian officials could not be reached for comment on the claim.
Egyptian authorities have tightened security on the border with the Gaza Strip following last summer's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the military.
The Gaza Strip continues to reel under an Israeli blockade, now in its eighth year.
Israel allows fishing up to six miles off the Gaza coast.
Gaza fishermen say the restrictions have adversely impacted their traditional business, saying their annual hauls of fish have fallen from pre-blockade levels of some 4000 tons to a current 1500 tons.
Of the Gaza Strip's roughly 1.8 million inhabitants, about 40,000 earn their living from fishing, according to the Palestinian Fishermen's Union.Last Mod: 07 Mayıs 2014, 09:52
