Gaza to have more electricity soon: Hamdallah

The Gaza Strip would have electrical power for 16 hours every day soon, instead of five hours every day at present, a senior Palestinian government official said Saturday.

Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah added that the extension of electrical power delivery time in the Gaza Strip would be made within weeks.

He said during a press conference in Ramallah with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini that some members of his government would pay visits to some Arab countries within days to ask their governments to honor financial pledges they made for Gaza during a recent gathering in Cairo.

Gaza has been having a daily electrical power deliver between five and six hours every day since 2012 because of the absence of fuel necessary for the operation of power plants.

The latest Israeli offensive on the blockaded Palestinian enclave destroyed most of its infrastructure, exacerbating its electricity crisis.

Hamdallah called on the international community to honor the financial pledges made during the Gaza reconstruction gathering in Cairo last month.

A source within the Palestinian government, meanwhile, revealed that the government had succeeded in the past few days to enter $200 million into Gaza for reconstruction projects in it.

Gaza was severely battered by Israel during its latest 51-day offensive on it.

Apart from killing 2,157 people and injuring more than 11,000 others, the offensive left thousands of homes and facilities either in total or partial ruin.
