Gazans hopeful for UN recognition of Palestinian state

Gazans set eyes and ears on a speech their president, Mahmoud Abbas, delivered Friday at the UN General Assembly following a formal request he submitted to the UN for the recognition of the Palestinian state.

"There is no other country in the world under occupation except for us. We want an end to the occupation. Mahmoud Abbas has the support of all Palestinians," Jabril Abu Qamail told the Anadolu Agency correspondent as he watched the Palestinian president on TV.

Despite fierce opposition from Israel and a U.S. veto threat, the Palestinian president appealed on Friday to the United Nations for full membership, the first step to declaring nationhood.

"This cruelty continues for 60 years. With God's willing they will recognize our state. We are tired and we want live in peace," Abu Qamail said.

"Despite the U.S. threat for a Security Council veto, the UN will recognize the Palestinian state. Abbas has our full support," Ahmad Al Jarjavi said.
