Hamas discredits Fatah on Rafah crossing closure

The Palestinian faction Hamas on Monday said that recent statements by a member of the Central Committee of the West Bank-based Fatah movement had revealed the real reasons behind the closure of the Rafah crossing, a border point between Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said it is now clear that the crossing point was closed down by Egypt because of ongoing military operations in the Sinai Peninsula.

Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al-Ahmad had said that Egyptian authorities had informed him earlier that military operations in Sinai stood behind the closure of the border crossing point.

"This means that other reasons propagated by the Palestinian Authority for the closure of the border point had nothing to do with reality," Abu Zuhri said in a statement.

He described the reasons propagated by the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas as an attempt to justify the closure of the border crossing.

Egypt has started closing the border point down soon after a major attack was carried out against an army camp in Sinai, leaving 31 troops dead and an equal number wounded.

The ensuing crackdown included the demolition of hundreds of homes in the border area between Egypt and the Gaza Strip and also a more intense crackdown on underground tunnels in the border area.

The Palestinian Authority has accused Hamas of failing to hand the management of the Rafah crossing over to the Palestinian national unity government, an accusation denied by Hamas.

The Rafah crossing is now Gaza's only gateway to the outside world following the closure of the territory's other crossing points with Israel and the occupied West Bank by Israeli authorities.

Gaza – home to around 1.9 million people – has been under an all-out Israeli blockade since 2007.
