Palestinian resistance movement Hamas on Sunday slammed as an attempt by Israel to cover up the "ugly face of its occupation and its crimes" against Palestinians in recent statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he said the movement "seeks a new Holocaust."

"It's the Israeli occupation that commits a Holocaust against the Palestinian people," Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri said on his Facebook page.

"Netanyahu's latest statements are just an attempt to cover up the crimes of the occupation against the Palestinian people," he added.

Addressing a group of cabinet members on Sunday, Netanyahu accused Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, of "trying to start another Holocaust."

The Israeli premier's remarks came hours before Israel marks its annual Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Israel will on Sunday night begin its yearly Holocaust Remembrance Day to commemorate the mass-killing of Jews by Nazi Germany during the World War II (1939 – 1945).

Earlier, official Palestinian news agency Wafa quoted Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as saying that the Holocaust was the "most heinous crime against humanity in the modern era."
