Hamas founder Muhammad Taha passed away

Hamas's military wing Izzeddin El Kasam brigades announced through an internet message that he had passed away after a long illness and declined to name the health condition.

One of the co-founders of the group Hamas, Muhammed Taha has reportedly died in the hospital where he was seeking treatment. He was taken in for questioning by Israeli authorities in 2003. Muhammad Taha had taken ill with a heart complaint at his home in Gaza's Burej Camp and was taken to hospital.

Muhammed Taha was born in Palestine in 1937. He played an important role in the creation of Hamas in 1987. He worked with Sheikh Ahmed Yasin for many years.

He was taken in for questioning by Israel in 2003. He was freed a year later. He had five children.
