Leading Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh has asserted that the Palestinian resistance will continue to fight the Israeli occupation and will not get into conflicts with any "Arab side," in reference to Egypt.

"Hamas movement and its military wing, Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, will not get into military confrontations with any Arab side," Hanyieh said during a tour in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, late Sunday.

"The Egyptian army is not our enemy, even if we don't agree with the blockade and the imposed buffer zone [on Egypt's border with Gaza], that doesn't mean we would point our guns at Egypt's army," he said.

"The Israeli occupation is what in the crosshairs of the Palestinian resistance," he added.

Egyptian media outlets have recently accused Hamas and its military wing of carrying out attacks in Egypt's northeastern Sinai Peninsula, a claim that the movement has consistently denied.

Since last October, Egyptian authorities have been establishing a one-kilometer buffer zone between the Egyptian town of Rafah and the Gaza border.

Egyptian security forces have been waging a campaign against militants in Sinai – which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip – amid a rise in attacks on army and police personnel since the ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi in mid-2013.
