ICRC celebrates 150th anniversary with photo fair in Gaza
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday opened a photo exhibition in the Gaza Strip as part of the international body's celebration of its 150th anniversary.

Attending the inauguration of the fair were Christian Cardon De Lichtbuer, the head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Gaza, and Bassem Naeem, an advisor to Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, De Lichtbuer said photos in the exhibition outline the activities of ICRC through 150 years of achievements.

He added that celebrating the 150th anniversary of the committee is a good chance for the ICRC staff to look a little backward to assess their performance and the things they managed to achieve as well as the things they came short of achieving.

He said ICRC activities in Gaza include enabling Gaza families to visit their detained relatives in Israeli jails and also ensuring that successive governments in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank show respect for the human rights of prisoners.

Meanwhile, Gaza government spokeswoman Israa al-Mudalal said ICRC played an "effective" and "important" role in backing the Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails.

"I hope ICRC will continue to play an active role in serving Palestinian humanitarian causes," al-Mudalal told AA.

ICRC was founded in 1863 as an independent and objective organization whose work is based on the Geneva Convention of 1949.
