Irish Trade and Development Minister Joe Costello arrived in Gaza on Wednesday morning through the Erez border crossing with Israel for an unannounced visit expected to last only a few hours.
Sources have told Anadolu Agency that, while in Gaza, the Irish official was expected to meet with officials from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
UNRWA Gaza spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna declined to elaborate on the reasons for Costello's visit.
European officials visiting the Gaza Strip must coordinate their visits with the UNRWA, given the absence of diplomatic relations between most European capitals and the Hamas-run Gaza government.
No officials from Hamas or the Gaza government were immediately available for comment on the Irish minister's visit.
Last Monday, Costello paid a visit to Lebanon's Burj al-Barajneh refugee camp to discuss the challenges facing the UNRWA, as Palestinian refugees continue to pour into Lebanon from war-torn Syria next door.
During his visit to the camp in Lebanon, Costello announced a 500,000-euro donation to UNRWA from the Irish government.Last Mod: 09 Ekim 2013, 17:43
