Islamic Jihad says senior figure faces risk of assasination attempt

World Bulletin / News Desk

The Islamic Jihad Movement (PIJ) in Palestine is concerned for the safety of one of its senior figures following his labelling by the United States (US) as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" on Thursday.

The Islamic Jihad are worried that their Deputy Secretary General Ziyad al-Nakhalah could be targeted by Israel as a result of the label.

"The designation of al-Nakhalah as a terrorist provides a political and judicial opportunity for Israel to target al-Nakhalah everywhere."

Shihab said the decision of the US Department of State is construed to "form a basis for targeting Palestinian resistance", and he said that the US will be responsible for the steps of Israel against al-Nakhalah.

Officially, the designation means that US citizens are prohibited from engaging in transactions with al-Nakhalah and all property and interests in the US or fall under the possession of the US are frozen.

The Islamic Jihad Movement have said that they will not "stand idle with hands tied" against the decision of the US.

The Islamic Jihad (PIJ) was designated by the US State Department as a "Foreign Terrorist Organization" on October 8, 1997.
