Israel detains 3 family members of Palestinian 'stabber'

Israeli forces on Wednesday detained three family members of a Palestinian man, who stabbed two Israelis in a Jewish-only settlement in the occupied West Bank, eyewitnesses have said.

Israeli forces stormed the Al-Aizaria village near East Jerusalem and detained three members of the Abu Sneinah family, witnesses said.

Clashes erupted between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces, which used teargas to disperse them, according to the witnesses.

Earlier Wednesday, Israeli police said that a Palestinian man had stabbed two Israelis in the Mishor Adumim settlement.

"Suspect stabbed 2 Israelis in supermarket in Mishor Adumim near Jerusalem," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld wrote on Twitter.

He said that the attacker had subsequently been shot by security forces.

Tension has run high in the region since late October, when Israel briefly closed occupied East Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound after an extremist rabbi was shot and injured by a Palestinian man in West Jerusalem.

The shooting suspect was later killed by Israeli forces in a raid on his East Jerusalem home.

Further aggravating the situation, a handful of Israeli MPs and scores of Jewish settlers have forced their way into the mosque complex in recent weeks, drawing the ire of Muslim worshippers and official condemnation from Arab and Muslim countries.

Since then, several Israelis have been killed and injured in a spate of attacks by Palestinians – both inside Israel and in the occupied territories.
