Israeli Housing Minister Uri Ariel has reiterated his government's intention to continue construction of new Jewish-only settlements in the occupied West Bank and Al-Quds (East Jerusalem), according to Israeli Hebrew-language daily Maariv.

"Many Israeli government ministers will continue to support settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem," Ariel said on Wednesday while laying the foundation stone for an educational center in the Jewish-only Itamar settlement southeast of Nablus.

The minister added that "construction activity in West Bank settlements and in the city of Jerusalem will continue; many [housing] units will be added to them."

On Monday, Israel's Civil Administration approved construction of 800 new housing units for Jewish-only settlements and outposts in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians insist that Israeli settlement building must stop before a comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian final-status agreement can be reached.

Both the UN and the US consider Israeli settlement activity on occupied Palestinian land to be a breach of international law.
