Israeli authorities have ordered the confiscation of 300 dunums of Palestinian land in the West Bank city of Nablus, a Palestinian official said on Monday.

"Military orders have been issued to confiscate 300 dunums of land in Jaloud village to establish an educational compound, a cemetery and farmland," Ghassan Daghlas, who is responsible for monitoring Israeli settlement activity in the northern West Bank, told Anadolu Agency.

One dunum is roughly equivalent to 1000 square meters of land.

According to Daghlas, Palestinian land in Jaloud and in surrounding villages has long been subject to intermittent seizures by Israeli authorities.

"But the Israeli practice has escalated in recent months," he said.

Israeli officials could not be reached for comment on the claims.

On Sunday, the finance committee in the Knesset (Israel's parliament) approved the transfer of 177 million Israeli shekels (roughly $50 million) to the Settlement Division, a controversial NGO tasked with encouraging Jewish settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.

Last week, Israeli authorities approved building permits for 2269 West Bank settlement units.

Palestinians insist that Israeli settlement building must stop before a comprehensive peace agreement can be reached.

Both the U.N. and the U.S. consider the construction of Jewish-only settlements on occupied Palestinian land as a violation of international law.
