Scores of Israeli settlers and intelligence agents on Wednesday stormed the Aqsa Mosque compound in the city of Al-Quds (East Jerusalem), in the latest violation of Islam's thirst holiest site.

"The Aqsa Mosque is under violent attack led by extremist [Jewish] settlers backed by Israeli police," Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, director of Islamic Religious Endowments in Jerusalem, told Anadolu Agency.

"Al-Aqsa is in serious danger," he said. "The Islamic world should act in order to defend the holy mosque."

Al-Aqsa compound guard Abdel-Jabar Abu Nejm said that some 90 Israeli intelligence agents had stormed the site.

"Thirty-eight of them entered the Alkibali and Marwani mosques, in addition to the Dome of the Rock," Abu Nejm told AA.

"In addition to the intelligence agents, 36 Jewish extremist desecrated the Al-Aqsa compound" he said.

Abu Nejm said dozens of Arab Jerusalemites and school students had begun shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") as the setters entered the compound.

In recent weeks, groups of Jewish settlers – often accompanied by Israeli security forces – have repeatedly entered the Aqsa Mosque complex.

The frequent violations anger Palestinian Muslims and occasionally lead to violent clashes in the mosque compound.

Wednesday's violation took place days after the Knesset (Israel's parliament) debated proposed legislation that would "divide" the Al-Aqsa site between Muslims and Jews.

Jews refer to Al-Aqsa as the "Temple Mount," claiming the area was the site of two prominent Jewish temples in ancient times.
