Israel's Peres praises Egypt for 'war' on Hamas

Speaking at a meeting with some representatives of the foreign ministry on Sunday, Israeli president Shimon Peres praised the Egyptian authorities for its ‘war’ on Palestinian resistance group in the Gaza Strip, Hamas.

Saying that "the Arabs wanted to uproot Israel during its establishment; however, they have become convinced that Israel is not the problem, and they are utterly aware that terrorism is their first enemy," Peres praised the new Egyptian post-coup administration for its repression of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Hamas was born.

Egypt has officially declared the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization after banning them last month. A bombing in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura two weeks ago was blamed on a group with links to the Muslim Brotherhood. Anti-coup groups in Sinai have also been leading the fight against coup forces, since the elected president Mohamed Morsi, who was a member of the Brotherhood, was ousted on July 3.

Although the coup and the bloody events that followed, which witnessed the killing of hundreds of anti-coup protesters across Egypt, was condemned by many all over the world, Arab kingdoms and sheikhdoms in the Gulf like Saudi Arabia have also supported the crackdown on the Brotherhood, while maintaining their support for Hamas. Meanwhile, Egypt has accused Hamas of meddling in its domestic affairs.

Former Israeli intelligence Mossad Chief Meir Dagan also added "We don't need to destroy Hamas, as Egypt is playing that role already."
