A Palestinian youth died of electrocution while working in a Gaza tunnel on the border with Egypt, a medical official said Tuesday.

Ahmed al-Saqqa, 19, was working in a smuggling tunnel when he was electrocuted, Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra said in a statement.

The Egyptian military has recently launched a wide-ranging campaign to destroy the network of underground tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, used by Gazans to get basic goods due to the crippling Israeli blockade.

Most of tunnel transport activity has already been brought to a halt as a result of the Egyptian army's recent demolition activities.
