A Palestinian prisoner died on Tuesday from complications due to an earlier assault by Israeli prison guards in a detention facility in Beersheba in southern Israel, according to a Palestinian NGO devoted to prisoners' rights.
Jihad al-Tawail, jailed for a traffic infraction, had been hospitalized since mid-February, when Israeli prison wardens assaulted Palestinian inmates – with the use of teargas in some cases – inside their jail cells, the Ramallah-based Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) said in a statement.
"This [kind of] assault has been a tactic applied systematically to all Palestinians arrested," the PPS said.
"Although al-Tawail wasn't arrested on a security-related charge but for a traffic infraction, he wasn't spared the brutal attacks by occupation forces, which demand a firm position by all legal institutions in order to stop these lethal attacks against [Palestinian prisoners]," the group added.
Al-Tawail, a 48-year-old native of Al-Quds (East Jerusalem), had been serving a three-month jail term on traffic-related charges when the assault occurred.
More than 5,000 Palestinians are currently languishing in Israeli jails, including a number of minors and women, according to PPS figures.Last Mod: 25 Şubat 2014, 12:22
