Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek has sent invitation letters to 24 professors of constitutional law from several Turkish universities as part of efforts to write a new constitution.
Cicek invited professors for a meeting on September 19, officials at the parliament said on Monday.
"The issue of a new constitution had a place On the agenda of all political parties before and after elections. The issue will be brought to parliament and public agenda after the start of the new legislative term. In this period, academics, who are working on constitutional law, will have important contributions," Cicek said in his letter to professors.
This is the first time academics have been invited to parliament over constitutional changes, officials said.
Cicek's meeting with professors will focus mostly on "procedures" not the "content", officials added.
