A coalition known as “70 Million Steps Against Coups,” a platform bringing together many civil society groups, is organizing a mass demonstration against coups and military interventions in politics that will take place in İstanbul on Saturday to voice support for the ongoing coup trials.
The demonstration will take place five days before the 16th anniversary of the Feb. 28, 1997 military coup.
On Feb. 28, 1997, an unarmed military intervention resulted in the fall of the coalition government led by Necmettin Erbakan of the now-defunct Welfare Party (RP). The Feb. 28 coup introduced a series of harsh restrictions on religious life, with an unofficial but widely practiced ban on the use of the Islamic headscarf. The military was purged of members with suspected ties to religious groups.
Coup opponents will gather in Taksim Square in the city's Beyoğlu district before marching towards the Galatasaray High School.
The coordinator of the coalition, Meltem Oral, said the demonstration aims to show that neither are they going to forget what the coup plotters have done to Turkey nor will they forgive them. “On the contrary, we will carry on with our protests until all the coup plotters have been held to account for what they did,” she added.Last Mod: 21 Şubat 2013, 18:01
