English Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg on Wednesday said they were saddened to learn that 5 Turkish citizens were killed and 9 others wounded when Syrian artillery shells landed in the south-eastern town of Akcakale earlier in the day.

In a statement released by the English Consulate General, Clegg offered his condolences to the families of those killed in Akcakale on Wednesday.

"We condemn the violence perpetrated by the Syrian regime and call on them to take all measures so as to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents as it happened in Akcakale on Wednesday," Clegg stressed.

"We will continue to cooperate with Turkey so they can overcome the humanitarian crisis at the Syrian border. As I indicated previously, England will provide assistance to up to 10,000 Syrian refugees so that they can go through winter months in Turkey without getting affected by the cold climate," Clegg also said.
