The spouse of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has filed a complaint against main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Kamer Genc for offensively interrupting her speech during a reception in Ankara on Tuesday.

As Emine Erdogan began her speech during a reception hosted by the Japanese Embassy in Ankara, Genc shouted, “In what capacity are you speaking here?” referring to the fact that she does not hold an official position. When Genc attempted to walk toward Erdogan, her guards stopped him, causing brief tension in the hall. Erdogan, however, continued with her speech.

In the official complaint submitted by Erdogan's lawyers, Ali Ozkaya, Muammer Cemaloglu and Burhanettin Sevencan, to the Ankara Prosecutor's Office on Friday, it was stated that Emine Erdogan had attended the reception in behalf of the prime minister due to his busy schedule. It also said it is very common in the diplomacy world for spouses of statesmen to attend and give speeches at such meetings and receptions.
