Jean-Claude Mignon, the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), has welcomed a package of democratic reforms that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan unveiled on Monday.
"I welcome the announcement by Prime Minister Erdogan of an ambitious democratic reform program which, for the most part, seems able to satisfy the expectations of the Turkish population and provide a response to our Assembly’s observations," said Mignon in a statement on Wednesday.
He voiced hope for the implementation of the package at the earliest possible time.
The democratization package includes reforms such as removing restrictions on the wearing of Islamic headscarves in government offices; education in mother tongue; changes in political parties law; improving freedom of assembly; and other more specific rights for religious and ethnic minorities.Last Mod: 02 Ekim 2013, 17:10
