In continuation with the tradition of "Çankaya roundtables," President Gül held a luncheon for social media representatives in the Çankaya presidential palace on Tuesday. The tradition first started by the founder of the republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, in the presidential palace was revived by President Abdullah Gül after his election to office in 2007 to bring prominent individuals from different areas of specialization to exchange ideas.
The latest Çankaya roundtable hosted Habertürk columnist on social media issues Rahşan Gülşan, ntvmsnbc.com Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Yeşiltepe, Radikal columnist on information technology issues M. Serdar Kuzuloğlu, academic İsmail Hakkı Polat from the department of new media of Kadir Has University, social media expert Zorluhan Zorlu and Star columnist Hakim Türkmen, a Turkish Twitter phenomenon known by his username “Beyinsiz Adam” (Brainless Man).
The event's participants tweeted and shared photos during their lunch at the Çankaya palace. In a jovial remark, "Beyinsiz Adam" asked his followers on Twitter whether the fancy-looking food on his plate was edible or not, adding that he could not ask anyone else there due to the elite atmosphere.
President Gül is known for his active use of social media and was in the press recently for photos he posted to Instagram, a photo-sharing application. Gül also has a presence on Twitter, Facebook and photo site Flickr. Shortly after opening an Instagram account under the name "cbabdullahgul," the president gained over 40,000 followers.
