General Bekir Kalyoncu has been appointed as the new Gendarmerie General Commander.
General Kayloncu was born in Istanbul in 1950. He graduated from military school in 1972 and from Army War College in 1981.
Kalyoncu served in several military units in Turkey and in NATO as staff officer. He was advanced to general in 1997. Later, he assumed his duty as the chief of plans and operations department at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the central command of NATO military forces.
In 2001, he was appointed as the chief of plans and operations department at Turkish General Staff.
Kalyoncu was promoted to full general on August 30, 2009 and took the office as the chief of staff of Land Forces Command.
General Kalyoncu is married and has one child. He speaks English.
