Turkey intends to keep its peacemakers in Afghanistan, even if NATO withdraws its troops from there, Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz as saying on Wednesday.
According to Yilmaz, during the visit to Afghanistan all officials of the country expressed their hope that Turkey will keep its troops in Afghanistan.
"The Afghans will feel themselves confident, if we keep our peacemakers there," Yilmaz said.
The members of the NATO coalition in Afghanistan plan a gradual transfer of security control to local authorities and withdrawal of troops from the country. After 2014 NATO will not conduct military operations in Afghanistan.
In early January 2013 it became known that the U.S. Department of Defense developed a plan according to which 3,000-9,000 American soldiers will stay in Afghanistan after 2014.
According to medial outlets, at present about 66,000 American soldiers are serving in Afghanistan, which makes up main force of NATO contingent in Afghanistan.
