Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Hakan Sukur, former captain of Galatasaray and the Turkish national team, resigned from his party, revealing underlying intra-party squabbles due to controversial policies of the AK Party government on a number of areas.

The resignation came after Sukur expressed his objection to government proposal to shut down prep schools, which help students for university and high school admission exams.
