Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has made a tense warning against an all-out sectarian conflict in the Middle East with Syria's civil war increasingly threatening the entire region.
"The escalation of the Syria crisis poses a grave danger. The region from Iran to Lebanon is being tried to be dragged into a Sunni-Shiite conflict," Davutoglu said Friday during an interview on a private Turkish television channel.
Davutoglu accused the international community of failing to take concerted action against "oppression" in Syria, saying the UN Security Council has also failed to live up to its responsibilities.
Davutoglu rejected criticisms that Turkey's policy on the Syria crisis was misguided, saying, "we have two criteria: one is moral and the other is strategic. In moral terms, we would do anything that our conscience dictates us to do."
