Turkish nationalists meet to agree election candidate

World Bulletin/News Desk

Devlet Bahceli, Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, met on Wednesday with leaders of Great Union Party (BBP), Turkish Democrat Party (DP), and Democratic Left Party (DSP), in order to discuss the nomination of a joint candidate in Turkey's presidential election.

MHP had previously said that they wished to present a joint candidate, with other opposition parties, who can "embrace the entire nation" at the presidential election. The party is meeting with other political parties, non-governmental organizations and trade bodies to discuss who they will nominate to run for president in the elections.

The term of the current President Abdullah Gul is to expire on August 28. Bahceli had previously met with former presidents Suleyman Demirel and Ahmet Necdet Sezer to discuss the presidential election scheduled for August 10.

Great Union Party (BBP) leader Mustafa Destici said that the president should be impartial and embrace the entire nation, and Masum Turker of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) said that they support any step during the process of determining a presidential candidate who will ensure Turkey's national integrity, while Turkish Democrat Party leader Gultekin Uysal said that the presidential election process should not be turned into a crisis.

Candidates for the August 10 presidential election, the first where the country's president will be elected by direct popular vote, can submit their applications to the country's elections authority from June 29 to July 3.

A candidate needs more than 50 percent of the popular vote to be elected in the first round. If no one receives the required percentage, a second round on August 24 will be held between the two candidates who received the most votes in the first round.
