Turkish Parliament speaker criticizes EU over membership wait

Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek, who is in Brussels paying official visits, has criticized the process of Turkey’s EU membership. During a joint press conference with European Parliament President Martin Schulz following the meetings between delegations, “We are running out of oil. The engine, the car is working yet we cannot make any progress. It is time for Turkey to move forward. It is not right to make Turkey wait 50 more years.”Çiçek said.

Saying that five decades have passed since Turkey applied to join the European Unioun (EU), Çiçek stated that, “We have said enough about the EU membership. We expect the EU take more serious stand toward Turkey. Turkey has to move forward. Countries which applied years after us are not the member of EU even though they are not qualified to fulfill the criterias.”
