Turkey's main opposition leader on Monday met with the country's president, Abdullah Gul, over a highly contested bill backed by the ruling party to amend the composition of Turkey's top judicial board which governs the affairs of judges and prosecutors.

"We want a judiciary which operates under the orders of conscience not a political authority," said Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) after meeting with President Abdullah Gul on Monday.

The controversial amendment is seen by the opposition as a "threat" to the independence of the judiciary and the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors, or HSYK, has already criticized the bill as "unconstitutional".

The amendment follows an anti-graft probe launched in December last year which the ruling AK Party rejected as a "plot" to undermine the government.

Kilicdaroglu said "direct interference" with the judiciary and "blocking" of the anti-graft investigation is a "serious problem for Turkey and the gains the country has made over the past 90 years."

Kemal Kilicdaroglu added that the opposition want a board that meets EU standards and within the principles of the Venice Commission and he told President Gul his views regarding the issue.

President Abdullah Gul invited the leaders of CHP, Nationalist Movement Party and pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party to the Cankaya Presidential Residence on Monday to hear their views regarding the latest developments on HSYK and surrounding controversies.
