The owl was discovered in the remote mountains of Oman after a wildlife sound recorder accidentally stumbled upon its call while trying to record the song of another owl.

Although discovered in March, the news about the owl has only been made public recently.

Magnus Robb, the man who discovered the owl, told BBC reporters "I was listening through my headphones, when I suddenly heard something completely different.’’

Experts are still trying to identify the family of owl the new discovery comes from, but Professor Ian Newton told the BBC "Based on the recordings of songs and calls and on the good-quality photographs, I was also convinced that it should be placed within the genus Strix, which also contains the Tawny Owl of Britain and Europe,"

The owl is set to be named the Omani owl, in honor of the Omani people.
