100 nations have donated more than 20,000 crops to be stored at the so called "doomsday vault" in the Arctic Circle, which was opened in Norway's Svalbard six years ago, bringing the overall samples to 800,000.

The vault, which was designed to withstand all disasters, was opened in 2008 in order to store an adequate amount of seeds which would enable the human species to revive lost crops in the event of global disaster.

Lodged in mountains of the remote island, the seeds remain preserved in their frozen state, if need be, for centuries.
