Turkish ministers presented awards to the winners of energy efficiency projects in industry at the closing ceremony of the 5th Energy Forum and Fair on Saturday in Istanbul.

"Turkey is dependent on external energy sources," reminded Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Isik, and added, "Therefore we need to support domestic production, maximize energy saving, produce with least energy as possible, and use the energy with highest efficiency."

Isik emphasized that his ministry regarded energy sector as one of the most strategic areas since it was the sector that causes current account deficit.

"When we get rid of energy item from our balance sheet, we will even have around 1.5 million dollars of surplus".

Isik also announced that his ministry would devote 1.5 million dollars of funds to research and developments projects in 2014 which he wished energy sector would benefit the most.

Meanwhile, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz said, "Energy efficiency must turn into a culture."

Yildiz underlined that Turkey should continue rising its income, while on the other hand decreasing its energy consumption.

"Japan has products which amounts 80 dollars per kg of oil equivalent, while Turkey still has to spend around 250 dollars."

The 5th Energy Efficiency Forum and Fair was organized within the 33th Energy Efficiency Week between January 8 and 11 at Istanbul's Wow Convention Center.
