China has reportedly developed super-fast technology that could see underwater submarines or torpedoes traveling from Shanghai to San Francisco in under two hours.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that scientists at the Harbin Institute of Technology have discovered a way to allow submerged vessels to travel fast than the speed of sound under water at around 3,600 miles per hour.

Improvized from the old Soviet theory of supercavitation, in which a large air bubble is created around an object to reduce underwater friction, scientists predict the method could allow objects may be able to cross the Pacific Ocean in only 100 minutes.

By continuously spraying a “special liquid membrane” over the object’s surface upon impact with water, supercavitation occurs after the vessel begins to travel at 46 miles per hour, Professor Li Fengchen told SCMP.

However, the professor said that scientists were still working on creating precise steering controls and an engine strong enough to power the operation.
