For the first time in eight years, Sony has outdone its main rival Nintendo in the rush to sell game consoles, selling around 2.4 million more consoles in the last financial year - which ended in March.

While Sony sold 18.7 million PlayStation 4, PS3 and PlayStation Vita consoles, Nintendo sold just 16.3 million Wii U, original Wii and Nintendo's 3DS consoles, according to figures published by Nintendo and Sony, Japan's Nikkei business news site reported.

"It's a title you have to keep your eye on as it's an epic franchise," Lewis Ward, a video games analyst at the IDC consultancy, was quoted by the BBC.

"But it's going too far to say it will turn around Nintendo's fortunes. By my projections the Wii U will remain in third place," he added referring to the PS4 and Xbox One.

Although the PS4 leads the market in terms of number of consoles sold throughout the year, the Wii U has been outselling it in recent weeks, suggesting that it may take the top spot.

The release of Microsoft's new XBox console in September may also challenge the two contenders' ability to reclaim the title of world's top console producer in the current financial year.
