The University of Algiers 2 will inaugurate its new turkology department on January 27.

The department which will offer three courses to 100 students was founded through an agreement signed between the university and the Yunus Emre Institute for Turkish culture, a written statement by the Turkish Embassy in Algeria noted.

Many Algerian and Turkish officials are expected to attend the opening ceremony of the department, whose curriculum was prepared by the Yunus Emre Institute.

Department head Dr. Shekib bin Hafri told an Anadolu Agency correspondent that Turkish language and literature will be taught at an Algerian university for the first time.

The Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) and Turkish Embassy in Algeria are covering the department's costs.

The Yunus Emre Institute aims to contribute to the training of competent academicians and researchers in the fields of Turkish language, history, culture, art and music through certification programs in several cities across the world.
