Developing Eight (D-8) Secretary General Seyed Ali Mousavi said on Friday that D-8 wishes to become permanent observer member of the United Nations (UN), adding, "We expect to receive the support of the member countries of UN."

According to the information received from D-8 General Secretariat, Mousavi had a behind-doors meeting with Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Jan Eliasson in Istanbul, Turkey.

Sources said Elassion highlighted the cooperation agreement between African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) and D-8 which is due to be signed on December 6, saying, "We hope that this agreement would enhance the possibility of further cooperation."

Emphasizing that the meeting was the first high level meeting between UN and D-8, Mousavi said, "We are eager to become permanent observer member of the UN and expect the support of UN member countries, especially of Turkey and Pakistan in this regard."

D-8, founded upon initiatives of former Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, comprises eight countries with large Muslim populations, including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
