Egyptian Apache helicopter gunships flew over the Suez Canal and areas close to the international waterway early Thursday morning, one day after a deadly attack on a bus carrying soldiers in the nearby Sinai Peninsula.
The gunships hovered over the Suez-Ismailia and Suez-Cairo roads to check rooftops in residential areas and "protect citizens," a military source said.
On Wednesday, 11 Egyptian soldiers were killed and 35 injured in a brazen attack by unidentified assailants on their bus in northern Sinai.
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has seen a surge in violence against army and police personnel since the July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the military.
