The first batch of Syrian chemical weapons will be transferred to a US ship in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, Italian Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said on Thursday.

“560 tonnes of chemical weapons materials are being held in Syria’s main port of Latakia,” Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Head Ahmet Uzumcu said.

Uzumcu said Danish and Norwegian transport ships are carrying the first batch of weapons and will transfer them to a US vessel, after which they will be destroyed.

Syria’s chemical weapons are scheduled to be destroyed by the end of June.
